Shoulder pad sizing

Shoulder pads are sized by chest circumference, with height as a check. The right size covers the shoulders and collarbone and meets the pants without restricting the arms.

Measure

Chest
Chest

Wrap the tape around the chest at nipple level with the arms relaxed. For women’s pads, measure around the fullest part of the bust. Compare with the chart; if two sizes fit, the finder shows both.

How it should fit

  • The shoulder caps sit centred on the shoulders; they should not hang over the arm or leave the point of the shoulder exposed.
  • The chest plate covers the sternum and the belly pad reaches the top of the pants.
  • Arms can rotate fully; the bicep guards should not catch under the caps.

Coverage by level

Lower-level and recreational pads are lighter and lower cut; higher-end pads add coverage and rigidity. Choose by the level of play, not by price alone: heavy pads on a recreational player are hot and restrictive.

Gaps to check

Two gaps matter: between the belly pad and the pants, and between the caps and the elbow pads. If either appears when you lift your arms, the pad is too short for your torso or arms; try the next size or a different model.

Common mistakes

  • Buying a size up for a child; loose pads shift on impact.
  • Judging fit standing still. Test in a skating stance with the arms up.
