The chest and arm protector and the goalie pants are sized differently from player gear and are fitted together, because the pants hold the chest unit down and the chest unit must meet the gloves.
Chest and arm protector
CCM and Warrior size by arm span, measured wrist to wrist with the arms out, with height as a check; Bauer sizes by age, weight and height. The finder asks for the right inputs per brand. Fit tests:
- The shoulder floaters sit on the shoulders without pushing the mask when you look up.
- The arm pads end at the wrist, meeting the cuff of the glove and blocker with no gap.
- The belly pad tucks into the pants; the pants’ belt sits over it.
- You can bring the arms together in front without the chest plate buckling.
Goalie pants
Sized by waist, and in the pro lines by hip-to-knee length as well. The thigh guards must reach the top of the leg pad’s thigh rise in the butterfly; a gap there is a common injury site. Goalie pants run larger and boxier than player pants; do not substitute one for the other.
Fit the two together
Try the chest protector on, then the pants over it, then drop into the butterfly. Check three places: the wrist, the waist and the thigh. Adjust straps first; change sizes only if a gap remains.
